Breast Tomosynthesis, or 3D Mammography, is an FDA-approved imaging modality. Recent trials have shown Tomosynthesis to be a more accurate method for detecting early breast cancers compared to traditional 2D mammography alone. Breast Tomosynthesis captures 15 digital “projection” images as it arcs over the breast, during a short four-second scan. Tomosynthesis (3D) mammography is the current state-of-the-art technology for imaging dense breasts. Tomosynthesis uses digital x-ray technology to capture multiple images of the entire breast from different angles to produce high-resolution, 3D images, enabling radiologists to “see through” the dense breast tissue and find cancer that may be hiding within it.
Because 3D tomosynthesis produces such high quality images, it also reduces by 15% the need to call women back in for additional imaging. Last year I heard about the 3D tomosynthesis mammogram and requested my physician to order a tomosynthesis along with my screening mammogram. She agreed to order this exam as well as a breast ultrasound. Much to my surprise there was a 1 cm mass hiding in my left breast. It was only picked up with the tomosynthesis and a targeted ultrasound. Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3-D Mammography) What is digital breast tomosynthesis? Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) mammography (also referred to as “3D” mammography) is a type of mammogram which has gained widespread use in the last several years.

The 3D exam is a separate procedure and is performed at the same time as a traditional 2D digital mammogram. Until recently, the best mammogram was a digital mammogram. This 2 1/2 minute video, courtesy of Hologic (manufacturer of Selenia Dimensions), explains how tomosynthsis (more commonly known as 3D mammography) works. The world's first and only tomosynthesis-guided biopsy. Ergonomic design for patient comfort and ease of operation. In addition, the Selenia Dimensions system's Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam offers the only breast tomosynthesis technology with the following advantages over 2D mammography, proving that not all tomo is the same: Breast Tomosynthesis/3D captures multiple images of the breast from different angles, allowing our Radiologists to examine the breast tissue one thin layer at a time—providing clearer visibility of the breast tissue and eliminating obscured or misrepresented findings that may occur with standard 2D Mammography.
